USE: If you are getting ready to smoke a preroll for the first time, you may have several questions about how to light it without burning yourself. Here are four helpful tips to follow when lighting prerolls.
- Apply Flame To The Tip Of The Preroll: Just as you would with a regular cigarette, the flame should always be applied to the tip of the preroll. This will help ensure an even burn.
- Rotate The Preroll Slowly: Before putting the preroll in your mouth, slowly rotate it between your thumb and index finger to ensure an even burn. Use your other hand to light the tip. Keep in mind that you don’t need to actually touch the flame to the tip of the preroll. Alternatively, you can hold your lighter a few inches from your preroll. As long as your fingers are not close to the tip, you should not have to worry about burning your fingertips.
- Start With Little Puffs: Once your preroll has been lit, you may begin to smoke it. However, it is highly recommended that you start by taking small puffs instead of immediately inhaling large amounts of smoke. If you begin with puffs that are too big, you can potentially cause damage to your lungs.
- Do Not Inhale While You Are Lighting The Joint: On a similar note, remember to never inhale while lighting your preroll. This is one of the ways cannabis prerolls are different from regular cigarettes. Not only will you have trouble observing what is happening at the tip, but you will also likely end up with a fast and uneven burn. When you are smoking a preroll, also remember to draw the smoke into your mouth before inhaling it. Be sure to also use your diaphragm when inhaling and exhaling.
What is THCa?
THCa is the acidic form of THC, full name: tetrahydrocannabinolic acid. As a cannabis plant matures and buds grow, its terpene and cannabinoid content begins to develop. The first cannabinoid the plant will develop is CBGa, also called the “mother of all cannabinoids” because it will eventually break down and produce primary cannabinoids, like THCa and CBDa.
THCa is not intoxicating if ingested. Chemically, it has an additional molecular carboxyl ring, which prevents it from binding to receptors in the brain responsible for feeling high.
You may be thinking, ‘what’s the point?’ But without THCa, we wouldn’t have THC or the numerous health benefits attributed to it.
When THCa is exposed to heat, such as when smoking, vaping, dabbing, or decarboxylation, it will convert into the intoxicating, beloved cannabinoid, THC.
THC vs. THCa
The biggest difference between THCa and THC is that THCa does not produce the intoxicating effects that THC does. However, THCa must be heated to create THC, through smoking, vaping, dabbing, or cooking for edibles. This conversion alters the molecular structure of THCa by removing a carboxyl ring. This also helps THC bind to CB1 receptors in our bodies, especially in our brain.
Effects-wise, THCa and THC overlap in some areas. Both have potential to treat nausea, but THCa shows far more promise for addressing inflammation and pain. On the flip side, because THCa isn’t intoxicating, some may find it less effective for sleep or pain relief than activated THC.
Is THCa Legal in Pennsylvania?
Hemp is federally legal under the 2018 Farm Act, which means all cannabinoids and extracts derived from hemp are legal. There is no specific concentration limit for THCa in Pennsylvania. There is, however, a concentration limit for Delta 9-THC. Hemp-derived Delta-9 concentrations can only be 0.3% or less on a dry weight basis.
Since hemp-derived THCa is legal, there are no restrictions for any legal adult, as the state follows the 2018 Farm Act, which federally legalized hemp-derived products containing a maximum of 0.3% delta 9 THC by dry weight. The state allows THCAa products to be sold in any product form, strength, possession amount and purchase amount as long as it is derived from hemp, not marijuana.
Will I fail a drug test using THCa hemp flower?
The short answer is yes. If you’ve consumed THCa, it’s highly likely it will show up on a drug test. When THCa goes through the process of decarboxylation, it automatically converts to Delta 9 THC. When D9 is consumed (which is ultimately what happens when you decarb THCa) it converts to THC-COOH, a THC metabolite. Considering most drug tests screen for THC metabolites like THC-COOH, THCa will most likely show up on a routine drug screening.
